Space Shuttle: The (next-to-last) Final Voyage

May18

Written by Roberto

STS-134 is the penultimate voyage of NASA’s Space Shuttle program. The mission marks the final flight of Space Shuttle Endeavour. This flight will deliver the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer and an ExPRESS Logistics Carrier to the International Space Station. Mark E. Kelly is serving as the mission commander. STS-134 was expected to be the final space shuttle mission if STS-135 did not receive funding from Congress; however, in February 2011, NASA stated that STS-135 would fly “regardless” of the funding situation. The Launch On Need mission, a contingency mission to rescue a stranded STS-134 crew, would be the STS-135 flight, flown by Atlantis.  More at Wikipedia..

Apple is reinventing the way we think about accessing application windows, organization of those windows, and the way we access running applications. A new feature called Mission Control in Mac OS X 10.7 lion makes it all easy.

Mission Control is the next step in the evolution of Expose and Spaces – a combination of the two with a little bit of Apple ingenuity added on top. As a result it will make it easier for you to view the windows of all running applications, jump between them, and get to the specific application you need very easily.  More…

iPads are changing how people use electronics

May16

A new survey of Americans is showing what many computer hobbyists already have assumed: the arrival of the tablet PC is sending huge ripples across the electronics landscape. This new report, from survey giant The Nielsen Co., shows that tablet PCs — primarily the Apple iPad — are changing how people use electronics. The tablets are causing declines in the use of PCs, e-readers and portable media devices.

As an avid user of the iPad, I can see how it would cause a big change; I rarely turn on my desktop PC anymore and the use of my laptop PC has decreased dramatically. Why? The iPad is always on, always ready and small and light. When I want to do something quick, I almost always grab my iPad now.  More…

iPad’s Popularity Is Hurting PC Sales

May14
2011
Written by Roberto

.. Not only has Apple made tablet computing viable, its iPad is pushing PCs into obsolescence, at least for some consumer uses. In particular, inexpensive netbooks and mini-notebooks, a promising growth sector just two years ago, are dying on the vine.

Companies like Acer and Dell, which invested heavily in those sectors, have seen their year-over-year U.S. sales decline by 25 percent and 12 percent, respectively, for the first quarter, according to researchers at Gartner Inc., a technology analyst firm. Apple, in the meantime, grew by 19 percent.   ..

… Although alternative tablets are beginning to take some market share, Apple owns about 90 percent of the market with the iPad. It likely will be a year or two before the alternatives can present real competition with stable operating systems, a good selection of apps and lower prices.   More…

So last night we were dog-sitting Beau and he was acting funny; he went in the corner and sniffed under the dresser. I shined a light under there and I saw…. THIS!!!

I don’t know how long it had been inside; So I moved the dresser and made a corral with various items that herded the little guy out the front door, and he was off into the night for a well needed meal.

InterMedia finds business professionals choosing iPhone over Android

May14

Android market share and popularity among consumers continues to climb, but business professionals generally prefer the iPhone, according to Intermedia, the world’s largest Microsoft Exchange hosting provider. Intermedia, which manages 320,000 premium hosted Exchange email accounts, reviewed the number of ActiveSync1-based smartphones its customers activated. Sixty-one percent choose the iPhone, while only 17 percent prefer the Android. This is in stark contrast to recent reports2 showing Android market share beating iPhone. Intermedia also finds that the iPad is a business favorite with 99.8 percent of tablet customers picking the Apple brand over the Samsung Galaxy or Motorola Xoom. Other smartphone stats from Intermedia include:

  • Total breakdown of ActiveSync-based smartphone’s activated on Intermedia’s service:
    • 61 percent on iPhone
    • 22 percent on “Other” (primarily Windows, followed by Symbian and Palm)
    • 17 percent on Android … More …

Einstein’s Theories Confirmed (Again)
by NASA Probe

May13

Written by Roberto

Two key predictions of Albert Einstein’s general theory of relativity have been confirmed by NASA’s Gravity Probe B mission, scientists announced this week. ”We’ve completed this landmark experiment testing Einstein’s universe, and Einstein survives,” principal investigator Francis Everitt, of Stanford University in California, said during a press briefing.

Launched in 2004, the Gravity Probe B mission used four ultraprecise gyroscopes—devices used to measure orientation—housed in a satellite to measure two aspects of Einstein’s theory about gravity.

The first is the geodetic effect, which is the warping of space and time—or spacetime—around a gravitational body, such as a planet. One common way to visualize the geodetic effect is to think of Earth as a bowling ball and spacetime as a trampoline. Earth’s gravity warps spacetime the same way a bowling ball weighs down the middle of a trampoline. More

The Jobless Recovery Continues

May10

Written by Roberto

There has been no recovery in the job market during the Obama recovery. Despite all the cheerleading by the Obama administration and the media, job creation has been horribly sluggish. The jobs created recently are noteworthy only in comparison to the lack of jobs created during the rest of the “recovery.” In contrast to other recoveries over at least the last half century, job creation has never been more anemic.

The Art of the Blog

The personal blog, an ongoing diary or commentary by an individual, is the traditional, most common blog. Personal bloggers usually take pride in their blog posts, even if their blog is never read. Blogs often become more than a way to just communicate; they become a way to reflect on life, or works of art.

Few personal blogs rise to fame and the mainstream, but some personal blogs quickly garner an extensive following. One type of personal blog, referred to as a microblog, is extremely detailed and seeks to capture a moment in time.
